Character Description:

William Herrick was born in London, the only son to a prominent Shipping family. His family was doing quite well, until his Mother died of Small Pox. His father, Robert, was devastated by the loss of his wife, and the business began to suffer. Seeing his business crumble around him, Robert decided to risk everything on one convoy. He borrowed all of the money he could, mostly from the Hotham family. Unfortunately the ships were attacked at sea by pirates, and all were lost. When the news reached England, suspiciously quickly, Robert committed suicide. Now poor William was left alone at age 12, heir to his families great debt.

Buckminster Hotham, Patriarch of the Hotham family took every remaining asset of the Herrick family as compensation for their financial loss. He even arranged to have young William taken into indenture to work until his families debts were paid. For about 2 years William worked in Hotham's warehouses in London. On Herrick's 14th birthday, Buckminster Hotham placed him as cabin boy on one of his Merchantmen, the Banshees Song, which was headed to the New World.

Herrick was worked mercilessly the entire voyage, but he discovered that he was meant for the sea. The work was difficult but he found it to be very satisfying. After several months traveling the Caribbean, the Banshees Song sailed directly into a hurricane. Herrick was lashing down a sail on the for'mast, when he was blown overboard. Herrick managed to grab onto a cask of rum that had been swept overboard. The next morning Herrick awoke on a lonely beach, surrounded by a disparate group of outlaws and natives. They nursed him to health and welcomed him to their community. He had washed up not far from the town of Tortuga, at the village of Auxerre and spent the next 8 years of his life living amongst the Buccaneers whose community he had joined. Herrick still wears a piece of that rum cask that saved his life on a cord around his neck as his good luck charm.

Personality and motivation:

Herrick was born to privilege, but spent all of his formative years struggling to survive. He has developed a tough shell, but has learned to find joy in the little things in life. One of the first things he learned during his time amongst the Buccaneers is that your first concern must be survival, and there is very little room for morality. As such, his English sense of right and wrong have all but vanished, but he still considers himself a 'good' person.

During his early adulthood he had experienced great tragedy, but that has been tempered by the astonishing joy of being welcomed into a new family. He is still pained by his families decline and humiliation, and is determined to pay off all of his family debt and return the name Herrick to it's rightful place in English aristocracy. Herrick has come to accept that piracy is likely the only avenue he has to accomplishing this goal.

Contacts:

Henre' DuPrix - Bucaneer 3: Bucaneer fisherman from the village of Auxerre. Henre' was the first person to find Herrick and accepted him into his family. Henre' views Herrick as the son he lost to the sea's many years ago.

Trixi - Expert 1: A talented whore at the Red Parrot inn in Tortuga. Trixi came to the new world from England with her husband, but their ship was raided by pirates and he was killed. The pirates took Trixi for their plaything and left her in Tortuga when they were done. Having no other options, she took employment at the Red Parrot. Trixi not only sells her body, but useful information as well. It is amazing what men will tell the woman who is pleasuring them.

Howard Clarke - Expert 2: Howard Clarke was a clerk in the warehouse owned by Buckminster Hotham where Herrick was shortly employed. Clarke has sinced relocated to Hotham's holdings in Barbadoes where he keeps the books for the Hotham family business.
